Founded in 2019, CO2BioClean GmbH is a German biotechnology company that aims to address the dominance of fossil fuels. In doing so, it solves two pressing environmental problems: carbon emissions and plastic waste.

The Science Behind CO2BioClean

At the heart of CO2BioClean's innovation is a patented fermentation process that converts industrial CO₂ emissions into PolyHydroxyAlkanoates (PHA), a family of biodegradable and compostable polymers. These PHAs can produce a range of sustainable materials and offer industries options to reduce carbon footprints and shift away from fossil-based plastics.

CO2BioClean’s conversion process begins by capturing CO₂ emissions directly from industrial sources. The captured emissions are then fed into a biological fermentation system, where specially selected microorganisms convert it into PHAs. These polymers are fully biodegradable, compostable, leave no toxic residues, and are suitable for packaging, textiles, and consumer goods. This approach has a dual benefit. It reduces greenhouse gas emissions and creates versatile and valuable materials that support circular economy principles.

Growth and Recognition

CO2BioClean positions itself at the intersection of climate tech, waste management, and sustainable manufacturing. The company serves fashion, packaging, industrial manufacturing and other sectors eager to incorporate sustainable materials into their supply chains. Their product portfolio includes CO2Textiles (PHA-based biodegradable plastics tailored for the textile industry) and PHA bioplastics (suitable for single-use items, packaging, and agricultural produce).

The company has received multiple recognitions for its leadership in carbon emissions mitigation and sustainable innovation. CEO Dr. Fabiana Fantinel was recognised as the Carbon Emissions Mitigation Start-up CEO of the Year 2024 by the German CEO Excellence Awards. CO2BioClean was also selected for funding through the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator Programme, which supports breakthrough technologies and deep-tech startups across Europe.

Why We Invest

CO2BioClean is emerging as a key player in the transition to a low-carbon, circular economy. By upcycling carbon emissions into sustainable materials, CO2BioClean supports carbon neutrality goals, the production of sustainable materials for industries and green innovation. We invest in CO2BioClean because it offers a scalable, economically viable alternative to fossil-based production.
